Essar leaks - The Logical Indian

Essar leaks: On 27 February, Centre for Public Interest Litigation, an NGO which successfully fought the 2G Spectrum scam case, moved the Supreme Court for a CBI investigation into the nexus between the Essar Group and top bureaucrats, journalists and politicians, including Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari and a host of UPA leaders. The petition is based on internal e-mails and documents from Essar Group of Companies.
Here are the highlights of the progress in this case so far:
● Company communications show that BJP leader Nitin Gadkari, his wife, two sons and daughter spent two nights on an Essar luxury yacht. They were flown to the yacht named Sunrays in a helicopter from Nice airport and flown back the same way. Gadkari was not a Union Minister then and had stepped down as BJP president. In his defence he said that this trip was a private affair.
● It has been alleged in internal Essar communications that the then coal minister Sriprakash Jaiswal, Congress leaders Digvijaya Singh and Motilal Vora, then MP Yashbant Narayan Singh Laguri and BJP’s Varun Gandhi referred candidates for jobs in Essar.
● The PIL said corporates used their money and influence to plant stories in the media and there was a need for the government to cancel the privileges like subsidized land, newsprint and houses extended to media organisations and journalists who indulge in paid news, or publish news reports to favour corporates.
● Essar group was planting stories in all the major dailies through their corporate communication department (CCD) & was in regular touch with journalists for the work.
Sandeep Bamzai, the editor of Mail Today, and Anupama Airy, energy-editor of Hindustan Times, resigned after they were named in the PIL as persons for whom Essar arranged cabs.
● Times Now initiated an inquiry against its Deputy News Editor Meetu Jain who, according to the PIL, asked Essar for a car for local use in 2012 while she was employed with CNN-IBN news channel.
● Anupama Airy named in the Essar case accuses senior editors of blurring ethical lines too and alleged that she had been asked to help arrange sponsorships from energy firms for the HT Leadership Summit
